I just installed an external cooling fan for my bare metal

Yep, it’s not an actual bare metal, just an old laptop, and it’s not even a proper cooling system.

But even if, I noticed my ambient temperature inside my box shows a different result. It becomes hotter than usual and the daily pattern changes. Here’s what it looks like:

Having a properly functioning fan can provide many benefits to your server, including:

  • Improved performance: Overheating can cause your server’s performance to degrade or even crash. By keeping the temperature under control, you can ensure that your server is operating at its optimal level.
  • Increased lifespan: High temperatures can also damage the components of your server over time, leading to a shorter lifespan. A fan helps to keep the temperature at a safe level, which can help to extend the life of your server.
  • Lower energy costs: When a server overheats, it can cause the cooling system to work harder, which increases energy usage and costs. By keeping the temperature under control, a fan can help to reduce energy consumption and lower your costs.

The heat generated by your server will dissipate into the surrounding area as the fan helps to distribute it more evenly throughout the server. This is why it’s important to ensure that your server is located in a well-ventilated area with sufficient space for air to circulate.

Ideally, you should place your server in a cool room with good airflow, and avoid placing it in an enclosed space or next to heat-generating equipment like a heater or a furnace. This will help to ensure that the heat dissipated from your server does not contribute to the overall temperature of the room or cause any other equipment to overheat.

In addition to proper ventilation and airflow, you can also consider other cooling solutions like liquid cooling or additional fans if you have particularly high-performance hardware or if your server is operating in a warm environment.
